Thoughtfully celebrate Pride Month!
Pride Month officially kicks off tomorrow! This month-long celebration is an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful spectrum of gender and sexuality and come together to fight for equality and justice in the LGBTQ+ community.
While Pride Month has become known for beautiful, boisterous rainbow parades throughout the country, the LGBTQ+ community celebrates this month in honor of a long, tumultuous history towards equal rights. That tumult finds us today, with nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills currently in state legislatures across the U.S.
Perhaps more than ever, the queer community deserves the space to rejoice, grieve, dance, and feel together in safety — here are some ways we can all help make that happen, this month and beyond:
🏳️🌈 Read about pre-Stonewall LGBTQ+ history. Though it was a huge catalyst moment, LGBTQ+ history didn’t start there. Start with this article about queer history, beginning all the way back in 2900 B.C. — and taking us all the way through to the 1960s.
🏳️🌈 Learn more about gender and sexuality. In addition to learning the definitions of LGBTQIA+, there are so many incredible organizations that offer free educational resources.
🏳️🌈 Ask your elected officials to protect and uplift LGBTQ+ folks. It’s up to all of us to protect and advance the rights of queer folks — start by contacting your representatives and urging them to support pro-LGTBQ+ legislation.
🏳️🌈 Provide care and support to LGBTQ+ folks. Whether you’re among the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, show up intentionally by supporting our trans siblings, creating networks of community care and mutual aid, and celebrating your people no matter how they’re celebrating Pride this year.
These are just a few ideas, and there are truly so many ways to support the queer community this Pride Month (and beyond) — at work, in school, on social media, and more.
