Despite a rise in fires, deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is at its lowest level since March 2018
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon continued to plummet in May, reaching the lowest level since March 2018. Deforestation that month was around 501 square kilometers — or about 147 times the size of Central Park in New York City.
That may sound like a lot (it is!), but it represents a 54% decline from the same time last year. Year to date, 1,182 square kilometers of the rainforest have been cleared — down 40% from this point in 2023.
This good progress is despite the simultaneous rise in forest fires due to extreme drought.
July is Disability Pride Month! Disability is a spectrum encompassing a vast uniqueness of illnesses. However, it is important to recognize that, contrary to the societal norm, disability should not be seen as existing “without.”
Disability Pride Month is a chance for the disability community to show the world all of its beauty. It is also a time for all disabled people to unapologetically celebrate their bodies exactly as they are.
Whether you are disabled or an ally, Disability Pride Month is full of so much to celebrate — together with activist and champion for the disability community, Daphne Frias, we curated some ways to join in celebrating throughout July:
Learn about Disability First language. You may have learned that People First language (like “people with disabilities”) was most appropriate to use, because it centered the person first and foremost. But the disability community has been pushing for the use of Disability First language for years — “disabled people” gives disabled people the agency to live authentically with our diagnoses.
Read books by disabled authors. It’s okay to not know, be a beginner, and ask questions when learning something new. And there is no better way to learn about disabled people than from them directly. We curated a “starter kit” of disability books to help equip you with the knowledge and empathy necessary to navigate the complexities of disability — and be an advocate within your community.
Donate to an organization that centers disabled people and the causes that impact them. There is not one intersection in which disability is not present. Whether it is gun violence, reproductive rights, or marriage equality, disabled folks are fighting for the bare minimum of equality — and there are incredible organizations like Open Doors NYC and All Wheels Up at the forefront of that fight.
